My Project

I am a Speech-Language Pathologist in Long Island, NY. I work with students with Autism, intellectual and social disabilities, severe reading/learning disabilities, hard of hearing/visual impairment, and mental health challenges. They are in self-contained class programs with classes of 8-12 students in a public high school and many attend vocational training as well. These students have a lot to deal with during such a critical period of development.

Some of my students come to my office on their off periods (lunch, study hall, in transition to/from their vocational training) when they could go off campus.

Some prefer not to be in the cafeteria for social or sensory reasons. But when they come to me, we make coffee and they chat very openly with me about what is on their minds... dealing with their disabilities, issues with parents (death, abandonment, jail, restraining orders, etc.), making good choices (not to fight, cut class, use appropriate language, etc.), and their futures.

I've seen such improvement through the years in their engagement in school, less or no suspensions/cutting classes/fights, and good choices outside of school (getting part time jobs). The coffee has accelerated this! I have been buying everything out of pocket but it's really adding up. These families don't have the resources to donate and some students work to help support the family. I'd appreciate anything that can be donated! I know I make a difference in their lives, and not just in their language/communication skills. I work with my students for 4-10 years, sometimes starting with them while they are still in middle school and some stay until 19-21 years old.
