Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a high poverty school district, and a Title I school, I see my students face many challenges both in and out of the classroom. Gangs roam the neighborhood recruiting them at a very young age. Despite the challenges they have, many students are eager to be the exception and strive for excellence. I aim to provide my students with meaningful yet creative learning experiences. Our school's motto is to prepare leaders in mind, body, and character for success in college, career, and a life of service within the global community through an education that values honor, courage, and commitment.
My Project
My students love building and tinkering in technology class. They like to be able to touch and make things on their own. These Smart Robot Car Kits contain everything my middle school students would need to build their own robot cars. After assembling the cars, they will program them with python in the Arduino programming platform. Arduino is a great platform for introducing students to basic circuitry, robotics, coding, and programming.
These Programmable Smart Robot Car Kits will provide my students with a great hands-on and inquiry-based learning activities that will motivate them to develop their coding skills to be able to tackle complex challenges.
My students will work in groups to build cars according to the manufacturer's instructions. They will learn about teamwork and leadership by being part of a team with specific roles. After assembly of the cars, they will create simple codes that allow them to program their car to move forward and backward, make left and right turns and then moving onto avoiding obstacles. Students will have the flexibility to modify their codes to suit their needs for the different challenges and assignments.
These kits and these activities will help further develop my student's problem-solving skills which will also help students think critically, and improve their independence and resilience, all while they are having fun building and coding their robot cars. This can lead to interest in a career in Computer Science and Engineering.
