My Students
The lab services approximately 450 students weekly. Our student ethnic population is: 84% Latino/a, 9% African American, 4% Caucasian, and 3% Asian, American Indian & other. According to the 2012 Illinois state report card regarding the district, 81% of students are considered low income and 37% are limited in English proficiency.
As educators we know that many of our students face daily challenges and struggles in and out of school.
However, our purpose is to promote problem solving and to expose students to careers they can work towards in technology.
My Project
My school is looking into transitioning into a 3rd-5th grade STEM school. I am in the process of building up coding and other STEM resources for my students to use. We recently received Osmo Pizza Company and 2 Osmo Coding Jam games. The Pizza Company game helps students work on meeting goal, following directions, making people happy, creating pizzas for customers utilizing fractions and making change for customers when they pay for their pizza. Osmo Coding Jam utilizes music to teach students how to code. In order to be able to use these great resources, students will need bases. I am also requesting a construction kit for our Ozobot robots.
