One of the biggest challenges in education today is engaging students in lessons that will impact their lives. The students need tools of engagement. They need technology. They need your help. My goal is for the students to use technology to take responsibility over their education.
Our school is located in the inner city, ringed by numerous subsidized housing communities.
Approximately 10% of our students are homeless or displaced. We service children who have been diagnosed with autism, emotional disturbances, and learning disorders. Our students have limited access to educational technology. I would like to reverse that. My goal is for students to take ownership of their education by engaging in relevant and meaningful activities using current technology. Our students are eager learners, looking for opportunities to grow in real and meaningful ways.
In Computer Science we have been learning to code using the website www.code.org. We are also running an after-school technology club in which we are learning to do video and audio editing, leading up to students creating individual multi-media projects. With my technology club, I hope to include an extension of the coding that they are doing in class. Coding has been called the language of the future. By learning to code, students learn to break problems down into individual steps, that they then need to create solutions for. Best of all they are doing it in a fun way. To learn more about the Sphero SPRK watch the video and you will see why I am excited for this project.
