My Students

"Here, let me show you how to download that file," a studious 8th grade Latina student proficiently walks another 8th-grade learner through the steps to turn their document into a PDF. Witnessing the confidence that 8th-grade students (especially female students) experience from learning and teaching computer concepts is thrilling as a teacher.

My classroom can be compared to a miniature United Nations where you may hear Mandarin, Polish or Spanish being used to help expand comprehension.

My 8th-grade core classes are comprised of 64 amazing students, many of whom come from bilingual households and receive free or reduced-price lunch. The ability to expand my student's language skills into the digital realm through developing their knowledge about a computer language through coding will give them even more of an advantage as they continue in their educational careers.

Our school serves students in grades 6-8 and provides rigorous academics, fantastic teachers, and a safe learning environment. As a result, we are consistently one of the top-performing schools in the state every year. Our goal is to prepare our students for success in high school, in college and beyond.

My Project

I am requesting the opportunity to attend a professional development conference in the area of robotics in order to teach coding during my 8th grade elective class. This 5-day tech institute focuses on various educational technology components that will allow me to gain new strategies for teaching coding that I can directly implement in my classroom.

This interactive program was developed to teach STEM fundamentals and help students of all levels achieve subject mastery through engaging and exciting hands-on robotics activities!

I am confident that the knowledge I will gain from this conference will help me to become an even more effective teacher. The knowledge I will attain from this experience will benefit my students for years to come.

By attending this institute I will have the opportunity to use the Jr. Botball sustainable program which provides reusable equipment, software, and standards-aligned curriculum to enable me to teach my students to write code and cover engineering design standards.

I am looking forward to the excitement of sharing the hands-on activities which focus on improving computational thinking skills and promoting mastery of concepts. With this knowledge, I will be able to return with the strategies I learned in order to enhance my 8th-grade elective. I will be able to incorporate technology into our work and build students' computational thinking skills. As well, I will be able to share what I learned with my grade level partner as we collaborate.
