Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a Renaissance and Title I elementary school. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds as well as diverse home situations. Our school is a neighborhood school in which all of our students either walk, ride their bikes, or are driven to school by their families or caregivers.
Many of our students are learning English and come from homes that speak primarily Spanish; as a result, our students learn best through hands-on investigations where they are truly "doing" the science, engineering, and problem solving.
Due to language barriers, our students are learning how to communicate as scientists through peer-to-peer conversations, notebook responses, and classroom discussions. Since many of our students have limited background knowledge and experiences upon entering our school, we strive to provide opportunities for our students to explore materials and engage in investigations where they can collect evidence to support new content learning. Our school has a Head Start Pre-K program servicing students as young as three years old who then continue their elementary career on campus from kindergarten to fifth grade. It is therefore crucial that we recognize that preparing our students for future STEM successes and careers is our ultimate goal!
My Project
My students LOVE anything having to do with robotics--that is why I am asking for an Apple iPad with WiFi that will allow them to run applications to program and code robots in our classroom.
Coding and programing are skills that the students of today need in order to grow into the computer science jobs of tomorrow.
My students will use this Apple iPad to access applications such as Code Lab to create and run programs that they will build as they grow their understanding of code. Our school is trying to incorporate STEM initiatives into students' daily classroom lives; however, our technology is extremely limited. While we work every day on "soft skills" such as cooperation, perseverance, problem solving and creative thinking, my students need technology to practice using technology. This Apple iPad with WiFi is another step in the right direction when it comes to preparing our students for the future.
