Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students in my class attend an urban school district with limited financial resources. Most of the students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Many of them have experienced crime in their lives and find it difficult to come to school. They have a range of learning abilities and come from diverse backgrounds. The typical student in my class needs activities that promote unity and teamwork. My students need ways to communicate with others in fun and engaging ways.
My students deserve an opportunity to interact and thrive in a STEM-driven classroom that supports and promotes twenty-first-century standards and expectations.
There continues to be a slide in the school's budget, so any chance to provide resources for my students is slim to none. My students need resources to address a variety of deficiencies in order to meet grade-level expectations.
My Project
The coding kits will be used by all learners to code their wooden heart. They will divide the wooden heart into 4 parts and label each section: happy, scared, excited, sad. They will use Scratch.com and the alligator clips to code each section of the heart to respond to a touch. They will use the sketch pencils as a conductor so their responses will show up on their computer screen. The safety pens, snaps and batteries will connect the alligator clips to the wooden heart. The goal is for students to connect emotions to situations as a way to understand how certain situation make them feel. The What If cards will present students with situations to evaluate their feelings. They will press on the part of their coded heart that reflects how they feel about the situation. After a few rounds, they will compare results and share similar and different feelings.
Students should be taught the language necessary to label and identify the different emotions they may experience to let them know that feeling different emotions is normal.
This project will give them tools needed to describe how they’re feeling and encourage them to express themselves productively. Using coding and programming will promote sharing and allow students to feel comfortable responding. Learning to express their feeling is a skill they need now and in the future.
