Dr. Ortiz from Houston TX is requesting Educational Kits & Games through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students an opportunity with technology and engineering by using the MINDSTORMS Education EV3 kits to build their coding skills.
Overcoming barriers is challenging for at-risk Latino youth. Research has shown that at-risk Latino youths are influenced by their own families, community organizations, and/or institutional agents to take advantage of opportunities . The reasoning behind this fact is that within these groups a student may find a positive mentor who can bring awareness to opportunities that can help a student move forward with their educational and career path.
As a 7th grade Dual Language Science and Robotics teacher, it is my daily goal to challenge myself to work effectively to give students an opportunity by offering a quality education to prepare them for STEM careers and in order to do that I need the right tools to introduce them to coding such as Lego Mindstorms EV3 kits .
Latino students face challenges such as being economically disadvantaged, living in single parent homes, being an English as a second language learner, and attending overcrowded schools. It is my job to show them that there is more out there for them to succeed if they are determined to work hard and seek the right opportunities..
In a recent professional development at Rice University, the presenters told their audience that coding is the way of the future. They stated that in the future, besides having a college degree, coding experience will be necessary.
Many things are said about immigrants coming to the United States and in my experience Latino parents from other countries want the best education for their children and totally support teachers in helping their children get that education.
By helping students learn coding skills on EV3 kits, I will be preparing these at-risk students by introducing them to coding in an easy, fun way.
I feel that as a Dual Language Middle School teacher, it is my goal and duty to prepare my at-risk Latino students for the future to help them and their families overcome their circumstances and achieve the American Dream. In order to do that, I need the resources necessary to give my students experiences that they would otherwise not have.
