Remember when students were able to use their creativity and work together to solve problems? Sadly we've lost many of these opportunities in the modern classroom. Please help me bring engagement back to my classroom and help kids to think and work creatively while learning to code in the classroom.
My students are awesome!
They are very excited when introduced to new software that allows them to be creative and persevere to solve problems and they love group/partner work. With our district's emphasis on the Common Core, we've had less opportunity for this type of cooperative, imaginative work and I feel this is an important part of any curriculum. In our push toward the Common Core, we've lost time for art, time for problem solving, and time for cooperative learning and my kids need this back in their day!
My Project
I want to teach my class computer coding using Osmo's Awbie to encourage students in realizing their potential in developing hardware and software that will be a necessary skill in the coming years of our ever demanding and changing environment. Coding Awbie teaches logic skills and problem solving, and it helps kids succeed in an increasingly digital world. Coding Awbie is the easiest way to introduce coding to your child. Today, STEM means creating learning environments that allow students to be more active. Whenever that happens, students are engaged in their own learning. There’s no manipulation in getting students active, either, it just happens. The outcome is that students better remember what they've learned when they are engaged in the process, and not passive by-standers.
Coding in the classroom is linked to improved problem solving and analytical reasoning, and students who develop a mastery of coding have a "natural ability and drive to construct, hypothesize, explore, experiment, evaluate, and draw conclusions." Wired Magazine reported that reading and writing code is the new literacy.
