My Students

My students have a love for learning and like being challenged. As a science teacher my goal is to get the majority of my students interested in STEM. Hopefully when some of my students get older they will pursue careers in STEM. My students enjoy doing hands-on activities, creating, making, discovering, and tinkering. Right now we do not have much technology but I am trying my best to expose them to the different technologies that are out there. Most of my students have not experienced all that the world has to offer and I would love to give them those experiences.

My Project

My school currently has a laptop cart that is shared among the fifth and sixth grade classrooms. I try to sign it out during lunch and recess twice a week so that my students get the chance to work with technology. Recently my students have been learning how to code through the website, Hour of Code. They absolutely love the website and are always excited to show me what they have created. It makes my heart happy to see them get so excited!

I would like to get two iPads for my students to code and control their robots.

Having iPads would allow my students to code more than just during lunch and recess twice a week. They would be able to code whenever they finish their classwork early or when there is down time. Learning to code is beneficial because it teaches students numerous skills. Some skills include critical thinking skills, problem-solving skills, math skills, and processing skills. Coding also teaches students how computers work.
