My Students

As a teacher, I am lucky to serve special needs to gifted fifth grade students in Arizona. We are a Title I community serving students who are financially struggling, but also students whose parents see our school as a real-world learning environment. The community is as diverse as the needs of our world today.

Our students engage in multidisciplinary projects in teams to collect data, synthesize, design, build and rebuild, all while learning the key learning standards for fifth grade.

If you visited my classroom or toured our school, you would see all the classrooms organized in cooperative learning groups. Students pair up with their face partners and shoulder partners daily. Students engaged in explaining their thinking happens in every learning experience.

I work on a team of three to develop lessons and facilitate learning for students in our STEAM Design Academy. We are teaching our students to be college and career ready, starting at preschool. We're not training them for sixth grade. We're training them for life as scholars and future professionals.

My Project

Last week, a student came to me with an idea to teach our class of fifth graders how to code using Javascript and of course I said YES! In order to help him advance the lesson using Khan Academy, I want the next stages of learning to provide visual and spatial stimulation for all students.

I am hoping to get students super excited about using Javascript and coding with the cool Sphero balls that will make their coding come to life!

I am requesting a Sphero ball for each cooperative learning group of students in my class so they can learn together, iterate, and keep on coding.
