Coding for Students with Autism

My students need 3 art bins, Code Monkey Island, a stopwatch, a clock and an iPad Air case.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Cosimano's classroom raised $190

My Students

My students love coming to my classroom because they are able to interact with technology and learn STEM concepts in a very hands-on way. Together we explore computer programming, coding, create simple video games, design short movies and build robots with LEGOs.

Our school is a K-5th grade program for students with autism spectrum disorder.

In my classroom, the students learn about technology. K-2nd grade focuses on learning the basics of how to operate a computer, while 3rd-5th grade switches to learning more complex things such as computer programming, coding and building robots with LEGOs. Most of the classes at our school are 6:1:1 (six students, one teacher and one paraprofessional). Our students do better with hands-on learning and classroom materials that are well organized.

My Project

These materials will help me to have a more organized and structured classroom. My four oldest classes have LEGO WeDo kits that they use regularly. The artbins will make it so that the LEGOs can be organized based on size, which encourages my students to use arrays (I need a 2x4 brick) to describe and find the parts that they need. The clock and timer will help who ever is project manager (time keeper) for the day as currently I do not have a classroom clock and the LEGO software does not allow you to have other programs open. The iPad case is for a new iPad purchased by the school, which will be used both as a communication device for students who are minimally verbal and as a tool to create short videos with Scratch Jr. Code Monkey Island is a board game that teaches the concepts of conditionals, such as, if the blue monkey has a banana you may move forward one space. This will be another tool to help my students learn more about coding and to practice their social skills.

Organizing the WeDo kits will make our building more efficient and will allow my students to use arrays to both describe and identify their pieces.

The timer and clock will help to make the project manager position a more active role for that student. The iPad case will create an additional communication tool for my students. Code Monkey Island will help my students to continue to build their coding skills, foster conditional thinking skills and build their social skills.
