Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When I meet my students every Friday after school for our school's Robotics club, I see the engagement and the enthusiasm in their faces, even though it's the end of most probably a very exhausting week.

My students are enrolled in a math, science and Technology Magnet Program in a Title I high school, with a 90% of minorities in the program, 90% of disadvantage social-economic families, and a very successful performance.

A considerable part of our student population come from difference areas in the city, some of them very far from the school. Our program is very rigorous; in many cases students take AP level classes (college level classes taught in High School) as their first and only class on the subject. In these classes (for example, my AP chemistry class), the students enter with the knowledge they received in their middle school and reach a college level in a single year.

My Project

Our students have developed a completely functional Robotics Club at our school. They have decided to organize the club in three threads: Programmers, Builders/Designers and Gamers/Controllers. The Programmers group has the objective to learn code (RobotC language), be creative and efficient developing small programs that make the robots function in what is called "autonomous" mode. Students need laptops to work on the code, which will later on downloaded to the robot and tested. Desktop computers are not suitable for this task because most of the times the computer has to follow the robot, attached to them by a USB cable.

Students have been working very hard to develop the Robotics club and we are at a point where in order to grow into a better level of performance, they need the required technology to be available to them.

Working with these new laptops will streamline their work and more students will be able to work hands-on in their programming tasks.
