Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a high poverty elementary school with close to one thousand students that is located in a neighborhood that is settled in the middle of an industrial area. Aside from all of the trucks that rumble by, there is a high rate of crime in the surrounding area. All of the students receive a free lunch because of their socio-economic status. My students are faced with several challenges, both in and out of the classroom. They all are English Language Learners and many of them have learning disabilities. Despite the many challenges they face, they are always ready to learn, especially if I provide them with creative and meaningful learning experiences.

Seeing the excitement in kids' eyes when they learn something new makes teaching the best job ever.

My students need as many hands-on experiences as possible in school, to enhance and reinforce their learning.

My Project

My students have been learning to code. These materials will allow them to work in small groups, and will give them an opportunity to actually program something that they will be building themselves.

Learning to build and code will help my students see that there is a world out there filled with many opportunities to improve their lives.

Most of my students have played with Lego pieces before, but none of them had ever been exposed to robot building and coding.

Giving them a chance to learn how to do this in the classroom will expose them to opportunities for a future career in a world that has a shortage of skilled coders and programmers.
