My Students

I have the amazing opportunity to coach the VEX IQ Robotics team at my elementary school. Together with two other phenomenal teachers, I am able to help our team members learn to design, create, collaborate, code, present, and WIN!

Our school provides 100% of our students with a free lunch.

Not only does this guarantee all students eat at least one nutritious meal each day, it also helps to level the playing field for all students. We have a select portion of our student population that qualifies as homelessness. These students are proud of their academic success and prefer to blend in with their more affluent peers. By providing all students a free lunch, everyone is visually and nutritionally equal. This helps our children who qualify as homeless to blend in and feel more confident.

Who would have guessed a little tiny school in the middle of a very small agriculture community would have a first year robotic team that has made it all the way to the VEX IQ Worlds Championship where we placed 9th in our division finals. The skills these children are learning and implementing go way beyond what they can learn in the classroom.

My Project

Our school has a strong connection to STEM and Computer Sciences. The teachers at my school recognize the importance of both. The fields of computer sciences and STEM impact many aspects of today's world, and I want to give students the opportunity to learn and interact with technology as much as possible. For this reason, I am beginning my second year of coaching the Coding Cats Robotics team.

Our Coding Cats had a winning team at our state level, which allowed them to proceed to the world level where they did very well.

We know this has generated great interest at our school amongst our incoming 4th and 5th graders. Therefore, we want to be prepared for the new school year by purchasing the materials necessary to add a 2nd and 3rd team to our Coding Cats Robotics Club. In order for more students to participate in our club, we will need these additional VEX IQ fields. This will allow more than one team to practice at a time. Students will then be able to fully utilize the time they have available rather than waiting in line to test their coding, robot designs or practice for the competitions. Because our club meets after school and we know that students think best when they are not hungry, we are also providing a snack of Nature Valley Granola Bars or Chex Mix to all students regardless of their home situation.

I am proud to be a part of this amazing 21st century field and can't wait to see what our Coding Cats teams will learn and accomplish this year!
