Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are 9th grade Design students who take an interest in computer science and coding. At our high school, these students are part of the Major Studies department and take World Studies, Technology, English, and Math classes where they learn and apply different aspects of these subjects to their daily lives. My Design 1 class places a heavy emphasis on researching, planning, and creating art, technology, code, and models through the 'design cycle'. I teach my students how to think critically about a problem and take logical steps to solve them both independently and through using teamwork.

My primary goal is to give my students fair and open access to higher quality coding and technology education through a hands on exploration of self driving cars.

The project I am seeking donations for is part of a unit on micro-bits and the technology that is part of making a self driving car. The goal of this project is to introduce students to the fast changing and relevant modern technologies of autonomous vehicles through coding. My students will be able to explore how computers and coding programs can make a vehicle move, and the engineering that goes on behind the scenes of these technologies, such as LIDAR, Radar, and motion sensors. As my students are growing up in our technologically advanced society, I believe giving them access to a hands-on exploration of autonomous vehicles is crucial; there is no better way to have my students learn than by doing and exploring the technology themselves. The items I am requesting will give my students this opportunity and allow them to connect this aspect of technology and automation to their own lives. My students have aspirations of becoming engineers, web developers, programmers, and architects; this donation would help cultivate their curiosity.
