I teach at a school with 100% free lunch. Many students only receive food while in school. Children come from homes that at times do not have basic needs such as electricity and water. Older children have responsibilities such as watching younger siblings and taking care of the home while parents work.
Building community and future leaders are important qualities at our school.
Students have so many factors that hinder learning, issues such as abuse, drug use, neglect, poor living conditions, lack of food, and lack of clothing. Most students live in single parent homes, and the absence of one parent creates much stress that is sometimes hard to bear. Even with all these issues, students do want to learn.
My Project
Technology is more than using a computer, it’s learning to think like one. Coding is the perfect tool to instill creativity while using technology.
When students are introduced to coding, they gain appreciation of how digital technology works and that what happens when they use technology is not magic, and they themselves can create programs that can be useful.
Coding encourages kids to think outside the box and problem solve. In addition, when learning to code, kids also learn other important future skills like critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity.
Coding shows math in action. Students get to see math come to life. This helps students see the importance of learning math and that it is used daily. These robots will provide a learning environment that allows students to explore new ideas and will give exciting lessons in science, math, and engineering.
