Cod and the Common Core

My students need a classroom set of a rigorous text to support common core initiatives and increase reading in science.

My Students

A typical day in my science classroom includes a lot of discussion, hands-on exploration and controlled chaos. A big goal for my students is to not only understand the content but to be thinking at a higher level and doing more problem solving on their own and with peers. PERSEVERE is the word!

My students are an eclectic bunch!

They have chosen, and have been accepted, to attend a career and technical school. The area is economically depressed and many of my students face the challenges of poverty. Students at my school tend to become easily intimidated by new information and difficult texts.

My Project

The class set of books I have selected is "Cod:A Biography of the Fish that Changed the World" I feel that this book will have broad appeal to my students; from the students who catch fish to the culinary students that cook fish. This book will allow students to explain the inter-dependencies and interrelationships of organisms and how they contribute to the dynamics of an ecosystem. I envision students using this resource to analyze the relationships between humans and the earth's resources. In my classroom I foresee this non-fiction text as a resource that promotes synthesis of multiple information sources and will facilitate more robust and thoughtful conclusions.

Perseverance is a real weakness in the students I teach.

They so quickly fall into the "I can't do it, it's too hard" trap. I am hoping this book can introduce rigor, yet in such a way, that it is less intimidating and more easily "consumed."
