My Project
Coco coir is an awesome addition to any raised bed because it helps to aerate the soil but also acts like a sponge to keep it moist longer. The plants really like to grow in a mixture of garden soil, potting mix and coco coir and we do not run into the problem of root rot anymore. Coco coir is also very fun to watch as we re-hydrate it because it expands to almost four times its size when wet.
Having a garden as our classroom is so beneficial because we learn completely hands-on and we get to eat what we grow, but it also takes a lot of soil to fill all the beds.
And we have to continuously top off the beds because the soil settles and is broken down by earthworms, bugs and beneficial bacteria. The shelving will give us more vertical storage space to hold all of our garden supplies.
