Coaching Parents on How to Teach their Children Math

My Students

Third grade at our school is a diverse group of students ranging from students doing math at a kindergarten level, to students who are at a fourth-grade level.

Our students need access to flash cards to help them improve their math skills.

While also giving the parents tools to help the kids. My school is a Title I school where over 90% of the student population receives either free or reduced lunch rates. As such, the kiddos do not all have access to the same number of books as other children. Some of the kids don't even have library cards yet, because there is no transportation to the library or both their parents are working during the open hours of the library.

My Project

Third grade at our school is having a series of monthly evening workshops to coach our parents on how to teach their children the "new" math along with the new expectations we have for our children while reading. We have invited 105 families to attend. In order to make it easy for parents to attend, we are supplying childcare and dinner. We are seeking help to cover the costs of materials we will supply each family. We expect to give each family addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division flash cards for fluency; three different books for reading, and a three ring binder, which will be used to house the notes we will supply monthly. The students' IRLA levels and their future math scores will be the measure of academic success. The parent turnout will be the measure of emotional success of the program.

First and foremost this project will strengthen the school-home connection, which will help the kiddos have more consistency in their lives.

I can only teach so much during the hours I have the children, I need to have parents continuing that learning at home. Their home life will improve because their parents will now have the resources and knowledge on how to help their kids.
