Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a Title I school in a low-income community. Free meals are available to every child in our community each day. The majority of my students are English Language Learners and their families have been impacted by COVID-19. My students love school and the school closure due to COVID-19 has greatly impacted their access to stable and consistent schooling.
Due to the school closures, and the uncertainty of the fall, many of my students don't have the ability to learn online.
My students are engaged learners and they try their best to be present online and learn with whatever means available to them. They depend on worksheet packets and whatever books they have at home.
Even with these hardships, my students are creative and very enthusiastic about learning. The majority of my students read below grade level. And with the distance learning model, the lack of access to books at home is greatly affecting their literacy. They would benefit from participating in strong read alouds led by myself with engaging books.
My Project
These books will be used to develop read aloud lessons. Because my students are learning from home, they may not have access to books or for someone to read to them.
As developing readers, my students need access to several literacy opportunities in order to grow as readers.
I will use these books to record read aloud lessons so students can listen to them over and over. Also, I will read the books live to the kids during our distance learning sessions. The books will be used to build comprehension and students' listening skills.
