This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"¡Buenos días, Señora" is now the most common welcoming phrase in the hallways during the mornings. My students have been taking Spanish for two years now and love it! Knowing a second language has been proven to be a great asset to the cognitive process, especially if they start at a young age. My students come from diverse backgrounds and walks of life. Some speak Spanish at home, some speak another language at home, and for most, English is the only language they know! It is my job to make Spanish fun, yet rigorous for all of my students.

Our school is in a very special neighborhood allowing some students to walk to school, while others have to take a bus from great distances.

There is enormous community support that makes the school like no other school in the city.

Our school is also very small. There are not enough classrooms for all the classes that are offered which means that I have no classroom. Not having a classroom makes teaching a language to over five hundred students difficult, but not impossible.

My Project

Headphones will allow my students the opportunity to listen to themselves in the target language (Spanish) sometimes, for the first time in their life! Speaking is the best way to acquire language and once they are able to listen to themselves, they will be able to know were they need to improve. It will also allow me the opportunity to listen and assess them and offer suggestions for them to become better speakers. My students will be able to use their headphones when they practice the speaking portion on Duolingo and other online programs that we use. This will be a great resource for all of my students.
