This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I can hear it now: students engaged in authentic, linguistically flexible conversations about culturally relevant texts and topics. Currently, my students are reading self-selected books from our school library about identity and justice. While our school offers some good options, I would love to curate a culturally and linguistically responsive classroom library to meet the needs of diverse learners. I am requesting books that are pivotal for making translanguaging possible.
Through these high-interest, award-winning books, students will have access to just learning experiences where they see and hear themselves reflected in the text while encountering the perspectives of others.
When students’ identities are mirrored in these books, it nurtures healthy self-esteem, affirms their self-concept, and fosters positive social identity. Students will build cultural humility, empathy, and understanding when they explore and examine diverse lived experiences and contexts.
Many students are building literacy in two languages. The picture dictionary and corresponding workbooks will help them further expand their lexicon. The strategies books are for researching, implementing, and sharing best practices for supporting multilingual learners. We need your help getting these books off the shelves and into our hands!
These books will surely enhance students’ linguistic skills, confidence, and sense of belonging!
