This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

Andy, Chelsea, Thalyiah, and Grace are the leaders of the many of the clubs in the library. They help lead the Maker Club, Book Clubs, Anime Club and Crafting. They come to the library to either participate in one of the clubs or often have an idea for a new one. I see the library as student-centered and as long as I have enthusiastic students like these I will help them engage in their interests. These student leaders often encourage other students to explore new hobbies and interests and are instrumental in making the library a vibrant place to learn.

The school library is committed to having fun, engaging and rigorous clubs for ALL students. Students can participate in one of the many book clubs offered. This is a great opportunity to build community and friendship through a love of books and good stories. Students can also learn to be more confident in their reading skills in a low-stress, relaxing environment. The Maker Club is offered every day after school as a way to tinker, deconstruct, build and just wonder. Students learn how to question and then to turn their questions into something tangible. I wonder how to make a rainbow flashlight? Then we figure it out together and make it happen. The clubs give students a chance to thrive socially and academically outside of the classroom.

In Their Own Words

We want to do fun stuff after school that we think we can do. We want to choose books for our book clubs and projects for our maker club. In class, we are told what to do and after school, we want to make the decisions on what to do and what to read.

We are making the decisions on what to read and make in the clubs. The teacher - librarian is there to help guide us but we plan the activities, supply lists, and how we want to share our ideas with the world. Sometimes we have BIG ideas- like making an arcade-like claw game- and we realize we need to do smaller things first to get to the big things and that is being a leader too. Knowing when we can make it big and knowing when to make it small so we are all successful.

We need supplies that are really expensive to make our dreams true. We need graphic novel books, LED rock lights kit, mylar film, magnet wire, resistors kit, transistors, light emitting kit, circuits boards kit, potentiometer assorted kit, band rotary switch, battery holder, male header for breadboard, Arduino Pro Mini 328, POWER ZONE FT-ORG40 lantern rubberized krypton with rubberized case, micro servo motor kit, Adafruit (PID 3213) assembled Feather HUZZAH w/ ESP8266 WiFi with stacking headers, Makerfocus development board, hand needles, thread, pillow cover, cordless electric cutter, and sewing pins. With these, we can make temari balls, have book clubs, and other cool maker projects.
