Clothing and Food Need to Be a Guarantee

My Students

I teach in a low-income school district, where most of our students come from single-parent homes. The students in my building face the daily struggle of attending school daily without having the supplies and the basic understanding of how to be successful in the classroom. Our students want to learn and be successful but often need help in the areas of academics and social skills.

The students are faced with many challenges outside of the classroom.

They often have to watch their siblings after school because of their parent(s) working late, are responsible for taking care of their homes, and may participate in after-school activities. Many of our students do not have access to healthy and clean food for meals and snacks. The students want to do better but need guidance and support in all areas of their life to be able to learn skills necessary to get out of the cycle of poverty.

My Project

I work in a school district where over 85% of my students are on free and reduced-price lunch. This means many of them get the majority of their meals at school. Throughout the year, we are made aware of students that are experiencing homelessness.

I keep food in my room for students who need a snack throughout the day or some food to take home.

The snack packs and granola bars go to my students that are hungry throughout the day. I also send food home on weekends for those in need.

Many of our students are picked on for their lack of different clothing items throughout the week. They are often unable to wash their clothes so the stains stay for a while. These clothing items, socks and t-shirts, will help these students fit in and have more options for clothing to wear. In addition, many of them are without jackets and sweatshirts to keep them warm in the Ohio winter. These items will help them make it to school without being cold during the trip.
