My 3 year-olds are some of the most amazing children I have ever met. They thrive while living in one of the most dangerous communities in our nation's capital. Some have gone through more in their young lives than many of us will ever have to endure in a lifetime. Yet every day, they walk down a hill to school where they are able to escape the violence that riddles their neighborhood and find solace in our classroom. Despite all of the challenges they face outside the school walls, they still come to school each day ready and excited to learn.
My students blossom with the educational and enrichment opportunities being offered, which helps them to build their background knowledge and exposes them to things they otherwise wouldn't be exposed to.
For all of them, coming to school is where they have any opportunities to build their academic and social foundations to set them up for success later in life.
My Project
Clothing is a basic necessity for every human being, and even for some animals. Our students wear uniforms to school every day and often do not get an opportunity to travel outside of their community to see the variety of different types of clothing that are out there. Children begin to really become interested in clothing at this age and this unit of study will expose them to the different patterns, materials, and types of clothing that is out there.
With these books, they will have the opportunity to see vibrant images of clothing from around the world and give them the opportunity to explore why different cultures and communities wear different clothing.
It will allow them to explore social studies and science concepts about different kinds of clothing and where and how clothing is made. Some of the fiction stories will also allow them to laugh and have fun with some silly classics like "The Emperor's New Clothes".
