Mrs. Obiaga from Pine Bluff AR is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need an iPad and a printer to connect to valuable online resources and to print important documents for class instruction.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
In an age where technology runs the modern classroom, textbooks are outdated and teachers are discouraged to use them for daily instruction, my students have to rely on unreliable technology to receive daily instruction.
My students are children that reside in a community with urban problems(violent crime, drug use, and food deserts) yet they come from families that maintained rural life styles less than thirty years ago.
Thus, the parents do not see the need for technology in the home past smartphones. The children attend a school that is in it's 9th year of school improvement and they have become accustomed to seeing both teachers and administrators replaced from year to year. The students have lost teachers in both Physical Science and English Language Arts before the first nine weeks was completed. The Physical Science teacher has been replaced twice. The teachers are mostly teachers with less than three years of classroom teaching experience. This causes a lot of teacher burnout paired with the unreliable technology needed to help sustain student attention and to help curb classroom management issues.
The iPad help access online resources that we are not currently able to take virtual field trips. Because of the location of my school and funding, my students' educational field trip options are greatly limited. Several useful educational websites are currently not accessible from the district supplied desktop. As students ask educational questions, the teacher will be able to access websites to address their interests in a more efficient manner to encourage critical thinking without having the lesson to fall apart due to unreliable technology. Students will also be able to demonstrate information learned through independent research in more innovative ways such as PowerPoint presentations versus the traditional poster board presentation format. The teacher will utilize the printer/copier/scanner to assemble documents for student use such as study guides and printouts from the online resources.
By helping to sponsor this project, you are giving my students the opportunity to receive the education that is necessary for them to begin to compete in the global economy and to spark interest in areas of learning they would not normally be introduced to in their communities.
