Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have a very diverse set of students from Haiti, Cuba, Colombia, Puerto Rico, and all over the U.S., although most of my students identify as African American. In terms of socioeconomic class, all of my students come from a disadvantaged background, much like myself. Despite all of the challenges my students face at home, on the streets, and at school, they always find a way to smile.
As a Title I school, we struggle to provide our students with the materials and support they need to obtain the very best education they deserve.
As I look around my class, I'm proud to say that I see a group of incredibly talented and intelligent students that excel in debate, cheer leading, track, band, football, theater, dance, and choir. I truly believe every single one of my students have what it takes to do anything they set their minds to, they just need the resources and opportunities to make it happen.
My Project
As a Title I school, we lack the technological equipment needed to facilitate learning in the classroom. Although our school has smart boards, they are not fully functional. For instance, our boards have no sound system and we can't write on them. Therefore, it is difficult to play audio materials on the screen for instructional purposes. For this reason, it would be beneficial to have a set of speakers to play TED talks, and other instructional videos.
This project would make it possible for my students to gain access to technology and other office equipment they lack at home.
Although we have 6 computers in the classroom, not all of them work, and a lot of my students don't have access to these at home. Since our classes involve writing and reading, students often need to type essays, look up scholarly texts online, or do research for projects. A few tablets, with keyboards and speakers(so students can type their essays), would ensure more students have access to technology in my classroom. Furthermore, our class printer needs ink for the year so my students can print their essays, class projects, and applications for different programs.
Finally, I added a few supply items that would make collaborative and competitive learning possible. The large post-it pads can be used for group presentations and projects, while the trophy, medals, and ribbons will be used to motivate and reward excellence in scholarship.
