This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are sixth graders. We are located in an industrial and working class section of Washington, DC. My students work tirelessly to close the achievement gap and gain entry to college-prep high schools. The current state of the world has certainly worked against this work.
School closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic has taken so much from our students.
The everyday experiences students have with their peers and teachers can't truly be replicated through distance learning. Our students have continued to put in amazing effort despite the barriers brought about by distance learning.
My Project
The most critical thing students can do to retain their reading and writing growth is to continue to read high quality books. This project is aimed at providing our students with books they will enjoy reading, discussing, and writing about while school is closed. Under typical circumstances, students would have access to books in the school library and from their classrooms. Unfortunately, our students have lost access to these resources. Many of my students do not have the privilege of having dense libraries filled with high quality books at home, and the economic strain that the pandemic has caused makes it more difficult for them to get great books. The goal of this project is to make sure every student has books they will enjoy reading while away from school.
