Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a bilingual first grade class in a low socioeconomic area where many of our students need extra support to be on grade level. Many come with little exposure to things outside of their home. Books are a privilege and so is technology. Most do not have computers, laptops, or even wifi in their homes.
My students are smart and capable of achieving great things, but the lack of technology at home immediately blocks them from advancing at the same rate as students who come from a stronger socioeconomic background and who have the use of technology at home.
Giving students more access to technology in the classroom can offset the lack of technology at home and expose them to apps and programs that can be individualized to target their own educational needs.
My Project
In my classroom, we do not have a class set of headphones. Although this doesn't seem like a big issue, it really is. Students need to have their own set of headphones that work. Sharing is not a good idea because of hygiene issues.
Having a class set will ensure students can listen to their individual activities on the computer without disrupting other students.
Remember that most do not have access at home to internet services so the classroom is the only opportunity they have to work on educational websites.
Thank you for your support. My students and I really appreciate it.
