My Project
Since the onset of COVID-19, my students with special needs have struggled with communication. Those who are learning to access functional communication through assistive technology have been impacted significantly in the areas of social, emotional, and mental well-being. These students need to be able to communicate basic needs such as how they are feeling emotionally, if they're hurt or sick physically, and how their disability impacts their self-image.
Providing access to quality materials for lesson plans and resource development is essential for my students using alternative and augmentative communication, such as picture exchange communication system (PECS).
The cardstock will be used to print picture icons onto, they will then be laminated for durability, then used in the mini binders as communication books. Teaching students to communicate nonverbally will directly impact students by providing essential opportunities for functional communication lessons.
These critical communication skills for students who are non-verbal are even more important considering the impact that COVID-19 has had on the communication gap.
