My Students
"It's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game." Unfortunately, not everyone even gets the chance to play. My students are currently faced with that dilemma. Due to the confines of a poverty stricken neighborhood and lack of opportunity many of my students never get a chance to play.
The students at my school are so thirsty for any physical activity.
Many have no athletic experience outside of school and some did not even have PE in elementary school. We fear that these students just do not have the resources or knowledge base to ensure long and healthy lives. Our school is lower income middle school in NYC. Like other similar urban schools, our students have adult responsibilities that keep them from exploring sports and fitness after school. Recently, we have been given a chance to expand our students' competitive spirit with volleyball showcases and with a potential basketball team. This is where we could use your help.
My Project
I am asking for very basic materials. First, I am asking for some men's and women's basketballs. These will be used with our after school teams. The balls we currently have are bald and need to be constantly refilled. Okay for the class setting, but not for the skill levels we wish to reach with the teams. I am also asking for a basketball stencil to create an extra court outside for spring practices.
Finally, I am asking for volleyballs. We need these for the same reasons as the basketballs, however volleyball season is almost at an end so these would be for next season.
