My 4th graders enter my room with a smile on their face, despite the struggles they may be facing outside of the classroom. Our school is made up of a diverse group of students from all around our urban school district. Our school services K-5 age students and provide a rigorous curriculum that strives to meet the needs of all students.
I create a classroom environment in which my students feel safe and ready to learn.
We treat each other like family, and I call them my kids. It is my job to make them feel successful every day they walk out of my classroom.
My Project
I am requesting supplies to create Close reading toolkits. These kits will allow students the opportunity to dive into passages or stories and truly comprehend what their are reading. My students continuously struggle with comprehension and by teaching them the Close reading strategy, they will be exposed to a deeper understanding of a passage.
This strategy, Close Reading, aligns with the district's Academic Action Plan and these materials will serve as a tool for students to use while they are reading and comprehending a story.
My students will be digging deeper into a story and truly understanding the purpose of the passage. The first phase of close reading is to determine the main idea of the writing or hone in on an important detail the teacher has asked them to identify. Students will use their pencil to underline their thinking or post-its to write it down.
During the second phase of close reading, the students will use the highlighters and magnifying glasses. The highlighters will allow students to annotate their reading passage. They will place stars next to important facts, underline words they know, circle words they do not know, and place question marks next to places in the passage they may not understand. While completing their annotations, they can use the magnifying glasses to zoom in on those key details in the story. Finally, the third phase of close reading is to answer questions about what you've read. During this phase, students will once again use their magnifying glass to zoom in on evidence to support their answers.
By donating to this project, you will be assisting my students in their reading comprehension. The students will grow more confident in their reading, and be able to relay information from the passage as they comprehend.
