Our school environment is a learning community where it is safe to take risks, think differently and persevere to reach a goal. Our students have a connection with their environment and have become great inquisitive observers. As third graders, we are developing our thinking skills and learning to accept that the answers are found through observations, asking questions and make connections. Through journalling, drawing and use of a magnifying glass, students are learning about their own back yard and the interactions of the ecosystems.
My Project
The students are working to be observers and scientist. From the first month of school, the students "adopt a tree" and make monthly observations. They journal by writing observations, drawing pictures and use a dichotomy key to ascertain the type of tree. As the seasons change, so do their trees. They continue to visit their trees throughout the winter noticing that the leaves have fallen and the needles covered with snow. The image left is what is in their memory or drawn in their notebook.
A 3Doodler would allow the students to recreate their leaf or needle of their "adopted tree" to help bring their observations to life.
