I am an English Language Learning (ELL/ESL) educator of a school with a huge population that qualifies for Free or Reduced Lunch (FRL). We have a hugely diverse population with students from all across the world. There are students from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the US. Some of the more prevalent languages at our school are: Arabic, French, Swahili, Spanish, Kinyarwanda, Lingala, and Vietnamese. I love working with ELLs every day. They come with so many different experiences, backgrounds, and cultures. It is never a dull moment in our classroom. One of the things I love most about my students is their motivation to build their English language and learn simultaneously. In my opinion, they work harder than their English language speaking peers as they are working to build their native language along with English while learning content such as math, science, language arts, etc. They always try their best and work outside of their comfort zone to better themselves by taking risks daily in English. One of the best moments we share is when they finally get a chance to see how much they have personally grown within the years or months.
My Project
This year due to Covid-19, we have been told we are not to use tables with more than one student sitting at each and instead have been using desks for all students. However, as educators who pull students out for special services in about 6, we need to use desks or clipboards. If we use desks, we need to use 5 minutes of teaching time to clean, sanitize, and prepare for students' next group. This becomes a large part of their learning they do not receive when we are only together for 25-minute sessions. Having a clipboard for each student will minimize our cleaning time as we can designate one to each student for the year and keep their papers clipped together in their cubbies. As support teachers, this will minimize the shared materials needed to be sanitized between groups and give students something to practice being responsible for. A huge plus is that these clipboards are also way easier for our young ones to clip since there isn't a clap they need to hold open.
