My Students
In my co-curricular block class I get the incredible opportunity to work with my junior and senior students for over two hours a day, over a two year period. My classroom becomes their home and my students become my kids.
As a parent, I know I need to nourish my kids in a variety of ways - academically, emotionally and physically.
This project will support this nourishment.
All too often we (educators) get so caught up in our curriculum we forget that we are working with 16, 17 and 18 year olds. They have energy to burn and sitting through lectures or focusing at a computer for over two hours a day are not an easy tasks.
My Project
So often we think about how to keep kids focused in the classroom. We think in terms of attention, focus, and behavior. Oftentimes we don't take into account movement, physicality and energy.
I plan on putting up some climbing boards outside my classroom so my students can get physical before class.
I find it important to have the opportunity to offer some sort of physical movement to my students to both burn off lethargy and turn on energy. They can do some peg board climbs to increase their heart rate, which pumps more oxygen to the brain, leading to increased levels of serotonin and energy. This will then lead to a more focused and driven student and a more productive classroom environment.
