I am very grateful to work with such a fantastic group of fourth graders. There are more than six different languages spoken in my classroom alone. These happy, curious and eager students walk into my classroom everyday willing to do their best despite some of the hardships that is happening right outside their front door and in their daily lives.
Our school is an urban public school that services over 800 students from Pre-k to 4th grade.
Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over 80% of our students receiving free lunch or reduced lunch. Many of our students receive food backpacks each weekend. We offer several clubs and organizations like GirlStart, Sister to Sister, Brother to Brother, Dare to Dream, G.A.P. and Young Leaders of Tomorrow just to name a few. These extracurricular activities promote and encourage academic success as well as foster positive social skills and build meaningful relationships. Our school is also one of the most ethnically diverse schools in the Houston metro area with students who speak a variety of languages. As diverse as our students are economically and culturally, they are diverse in their academics as well.
Having these six Chromebooks will allow for different structures of learning in my classroom. They will be used as a computer based center for math and science. Students can log onto the Chromebooks to complete their digital math and science lessons. Another way they will be used, these Chromebooks will give my students the opportunity to practice our technology competencies such as open a document and database, saving a document, or preparing for a slide presentation. I could download additional apps to differentiate learning for various math practice skills in the math center, which would allow me to have activities for my highest performing and most struggling students.
My project will make a difference because, technology is the future and because digital learning is fun!
Who would not want to have fun and learn at the same time. This will change our classroom atmosphere completely because every child wants to feel and know they can be successful.
