My Project

For as long as I have been teaching, all of our classroom writing has been done by hand. Putting pencil to paper is the way generations of students have communicated their thoughts and ideas. Beginning this school year, students will be taking their state writing test digitally, which requires them to type a response at the same time they have previously had to handwrite one. For you and me, this may seem like a piece of cake. I have vivid memories of sitting in my elementary computer class in the early 90's clicking away to Mavis Beacon typing courses. I am confident that I can type so much faster and more accurately than writing by hand. My students, on the other hand, have not used actual keyboards in the classroom. The hunting and pecking for each letter will greatly impact their ability to communicate, not only on their state assessment but in so many more ways as they grow up.

In this new age of technology, touchscreens have unfortunately taken over the computing world within the classroom; tactile typing has fallen by the wayside.

I became a fast and accurate typer through constant practice and having the tools necessary to succeed. By funding this project, you will assist me in bringing the necessary tools to my students; ensuring that the art of keyboarding doesn't die at the hands of touchscreens and voice-to-text.
