Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are in a TK-2nd special education classroom for individuals with intellectual disabilities who participate in the moderate/severe alternative curriculum. My students are extremely active, and their attention span lasts no longer than ten to fifteen minutes per activity. My students have a variety of needs including basic daily life-skills (e.g. diapering) to exposure to age appropriate standards based curriculum therefore they participate on the alternative curriculum. Due to COVID-19 we have been struggling as a classroom to get everyone together at the same time. Since my students have various needs, they depend on their parents support to communicate with me. Some of my parents have a hard time accessing our online platform making distance learning challenging but I am optimistic that our situation will improve.

My Project

We all have been drastically impacted by the sudden changes due to the health crisis we are living. Distance learning has been especially challenging to my students, being that they have special needs. These trying times have made it even more difficult for them and their caretakers to access learning with their minimal resources.

I know that having iPads in their hands will be easier for them to access distance learning because they are familiar with operating them in our classroom.

Although our school district provided 4 out of 13 of my students with iPads, it leaves 9 of my students with Chromebooks. This unfortunately is not working out because Chromebooks are not easy to use and my students have a hard time engaging with them. We use an Alternative Curriculum platform online with iPads and my students have positively response while using them.

I am eager to step foot inside my classroom and I truly miss my students.
