My Project
For our final semester project, we are exploring the health impacts of air quality. Using PocketLab air sensors, our students measured levels of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and particulate matter both indoors and outdoors. The results showed that CO₂ levels in our classrooms were significantly higher than outdoors. Government and academic research strongly support the connection between good air quality, cognitive function, and health in children. For example, the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health's CogFx study found that even minor CO₂ and particulate matter (PM2.5) increases can lead to measurable cognitive performance declines. This research showed that improved classroom ventilation and filtration enhance cognitive function, focus, and productivity by reducing exposure to these pollutants, which can otherwise cause cognitive delays and increased absenteeism due to illness (Harvard T.H. Chan School, 2021).
The requested resources will allow my students to construct 14 Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Corsi-Rosenthal air purifiers with Merv 13 filters to remove PM 2.5 and increase ventilation.
Our goal is to improve the air quality in our classroom and provide additional units to other classrooms in need. This project builds on last year's partnership with the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency’s Public Health Services—Epidemiology and Immunizations Services Branch (EISB). This will be a hands-on, project-based interactive learning unit with real-world implications for our students!
