My students need safety boots, waders, nets, and testing supplies in order to clean up our local park and investigate local aquatic life.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This project is inspired by "Collecting Bugs to Change the Planet (and My Students)!" I would like my student to be able to participate in hands-on learning activities that broaden their understanding of the environment- starting locally!
My students are a diverse mix of 9th-12th grade students.
They each learn in their own way and I often have to "meet them where they are." I devote hours of my day motivating them and proving to them just how precious and fragile our natural environment is! Many of my students have never experienced nature for themselves or understand the interdependence of our natural world (and the role we play in it).
My Project
A short bus drive from our classroom is a local historical park containing a once bountiful canal that has now become severely eutrophic. Through our Environmental Science classes and Aquatic Conservation Club, students are able to engage in annual clean-ups to beautify the park as well as the canal. The results have been plentiful, but the equipment has been lacking. With these boots, waders, nets, and other investigating materials, we'll be able to conduct more thorough clean-ups and multiple bioassessments each year in an effort to add to our current understanding of the health of the canal. Students will actually wade into the canal and try to remove as many blockages and debris as possible. They will investigate any organisms they find during our visits, (such as macroinvertebrates) and assess any evidence of pollution.
Donations made to my project will help my student develop background information on the current health of aquatic environments.
Students will be able to make a deeper connection with both our local environment and know they are making a difference for others that come to visit the park throughout the year. In addition, my project will help my students form inquiry skills and memories they will not soon forget!
