My Students

I teach children in one of the most expensive cities in the country. My students come from a variety of economic backgrounds in an increasingly crowded inner-city environment. Our 4th grade classrooms are routinely packed with 33 children, me, and a myriad of specialists who come in and out on a daily basis. Our school is circa 1934, quite small, and not made for this many bodies huddled together. We now have only the top and bottom windows that open resulting in poor ventilation. The plumbing is old, and the water isn't pure. Some students bring bottled water, but many don't have access to these, and often having nothing to eat unless I give them a snack. These kids deserve better.

My Project

Recently my city tested city schools drinking water for lead. The results were shared, and several schools tested positive for unacceptable lead levels. The school district issued filters for those schools whose levels exceeded safety regulations.

But what about the brown yucky water that comes out of our fountains and classrooms?

How long can you let it run before you try and drink it? No level of lead in drinking water is safe for growing children. I need a water filter so my students can drink the water from the tap.

We recently went through a period where our outdoor air was so polluted by smoke that we couldn't go outside. Recently, a generous donor donated an air purifier. However, I also need new filters to keep the air clean.

Lastly, more and more of my students are coming to school without midday snacks. I need healthy snacks to keep them going!
