My Students
I teach 7th and 8th grade reading to students who struggle with basic reading comprehension. They give up an elective to be placed in a reading class. My five classes are made up of a range of students who read between first grade to just below grade level.
While they might prefer to be in a gym or art class, my students are good sports and work hard to improve their reading accuracy, fluency, and comprehension.
When I find a good text, they are on board and ready to fly! They are kind and help one another improve their reading on a daily basis.
My Project
We have a flexible seating classroom that the kids love. In fact, they helped design the floor plan--carpets, couches, comfy chairs.
You will find many of the students curled in a corner on the carpet or lying on the rug in small groups reading a play or a story.
This is where they do their best work!
With over fifty students using the room, the rugs get dirty on a daily basis. We have only a broom to sweep off the debris. A vacuum cleaner could be incorporated into daily student chores and we would have an immaculate space to continue our cozy reading progress.
