I teach in a low-income school where many students have uncertain living arrangements. Many are considered homeless, live with other families or in transitional housing. Our school provides a stable and safe environment for them with many adults who care and support them.
Providing supports that allow students to arrive at school ready to learn would boost self-esteem and self-worth.
While many of our students have difficult home lives, they are still driven to learn and interact with their peers.
My Project
Do you know what there is a lot of in an elementary school? Dirt! Scrapes of paper on the floor, grass tracked in from the playground, mud from the walk to school covers our floors. Besides making it challenging to do work on the floor, a dirty classroom does not show that students take pride in their space.
A new vacuum would change this!
With a new vacuum, messes could be quickly addressed. A few swipes of vacuum cleaner on the rug and the carpet would be ready for group projects. A clean floor would show visitors that we take care of our classroom!
