This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a lively and energetic group of first graders who have a lot to say but need increased opportunities to be engaged in learning activities where they can read and write about topics and things that are important to them. Our school is located in the South Bronx, in an area with a very high concentration of poverty. Most, if not all, of my students, qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

My Project

My students are learning about the importance of daily attendance. They can be overheard telling each other, when you miss a day from school, you will miss a lot.

My students need facial tissues, hand soap, and sanitizer to kill the germs that cause the SNEEZING, SNIFFLING, and COUGHING that they say usually comes with the arrival of cooler weather.

Achoo! That is a sound that can be heard in my classroom nearly every day. The cold and flu season can be particularly hard on my students. When my students miss a day from school, they miss a lot! They agree that being marked present is an essential first-step to providing them with a quality education.

When explaining to students the importance of being in school every day, they all agreed and promised to be in school if they "don't catch the COOTIES." When asked what can prevent the "cooties?," they said, "having tissues , hand sanitizer, and Clorox wipes." They said, they would need the disinfectant "wipes" to clean off commonly used items, such as ("the desks, door knobs, SMART board pens and computer after someone sneezes or coughs on them." They said they would use the hand soap after bathroom breaks to "make sure our hands are clean." They said they would "need Band-Aids" for "protection against germs" from the inevitable cuts and scrapes that happen in the classroom and in the yard. They said having these resources would inspired them to "practice healthy habits" and attendance school every day.
