My Project
In my Science classes, I serve a population of students that is very wide-ranging. I am on a co-teach, inclusion 8th grade team, full of both general education and special education students. A large subset of my students are from military families, while some are native Hawaiian, and some are English language learners. This year, my co-teacher and I are planning a calm, welcoming environment for our students to thrive in.
Our school is over 60 years old and is in need of renovations and updating; in the meantime, I requested a few items to keep my classroom as tidy as I can: a shop vacuum and a Swiffer mop.
These items will be essential in the Science classroom and lab area, as spills happen frequently when students are "hands-on!" Instead of having to bother the custodians and wait on cleaning up minor messes, the vacuum will help us maintain our clean space as learning happens. Having a Swiffer will also be very helpful; we have room cleaners that mop once a week after school, however sometimes student shoes are extra muddy or someone's water bottle spills and we need to take care of wet messes on the fly.
Since we are limited with what we can do to spruce up our older building, my co-teacher and I decided to request supplies to make our classroom feel more updated and aesthetically-pleasing. Middle school students can get so distracted by minor annoyances (spots on the wall, old cabinets, etc.). Along with some locally donated furniture I received, my co-teacher and I are hoping that our peel-and-stick wallpaper, motivational posters, and general calming boho-plant theme will help our students not get over-stimulated or distracted and be able to focus on critical thinking and what they are learning about each day.
