This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Oakland is home to many recently arrived newcomer students—many of whom come to this country alone—meeting basic daily needs can be a significant challenge. Navigating a new country, language, school system, and culture often occurs while simultaneously facing socioeconomic barriers. I serve as the Newcomer social worker for our school and know that these small resources can make a powerful difference in helping students feel safe, valued, and ready to learn.
Providing essential hygiene items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, body wash, and face wash is not just about cleanliness—it’s about dignity and well-being.
When students have access to the tools they need to care for themselves, they are more likely to feel confident and comfortable in their bodies. This sense of self-respect translates into improved focus, higher self-esteem, and a greater willingness to participate in school life. It allows them to come to class without the added stress of feeling different or self-conscious.
In addition to hygiene, small gestures like offering simple, quick snacks such as popcorn can help students feel welcomed and supported. Many newcomer students do not have consistent access to food throughout the day, especially in the early weeks and months of their arrival. A light snack can help them stay alert and energized in class, while also serving as a small, consistent reminder that they are cared for and not alone.
I have observed as a Newcomer school social worker these basic supports—hygiene products and snacks—send an important message: “You belong here, and your well-being matters.” When students feel safe, nourished, and supported, they are better able to focus on their education and build the confidence needed to thrive in their new environment.
