My Students

I teach students with a variety of sensory and academic needs in an urban elementary school. My students come to my classroom for support in academics, sensory and behavioral concerns. They often work independently, in small groups or individually with an adult to accomplish their academic task.

My students are energetic, curious and knowledge seeking.

Our school is a large public school where 100% of our students receive free or reduced price lunch due to the economic needs of our families. As a school we have a 74% passing rate for state appointed standardized tests. My students have needs beyond basic academics. They seek support regulating sensory input, organization, emotional stability and social skills. My students work to make steps to success every day. My families that I work with also struggle to provide cleaning products for themselves and their clothes on a regular basis. When children are feeling uncomfortable due to not having items to regularly feel clean their emotional struggles increase.

My Project

When it comes to providing the basic supplies for bathing and cleaning clothes it can be a struggle. Since my students already face emotional and sensory concerns, not having soap to wash themselves or their clothes can compound these feelings. Imagine trying to focus on your job if you are concerned about how you will keep your family clean.

When students feel clean and have clean clothes they can focus on their job, increasing their academic abilities.

We have all experienced a time when we have been working hard and need a good shower and clean clothes. With your help we can provide these supplies for our families to help them feel comfortable and meet some of their basic needs.
