Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a librarian in an amazing public school on the south side of Chicago. My students are avid readers and mostly come from a low-income households in the Little Village neighborhood. Students visit the library weekly, which we are fortunate to have since only about 30% of the schools in our district have librarians running a library program. Many of my students and their families have come to the US seeking a better life. My students deserve to have a library filled with the books they want to read, flexible working areas, devices to access online learning tools, and opportunities for STEAM learning experiences.
My Project
My students love to learn while seated on the floor, so in addition to flexible seating, we need a very large and clean rug space to cover up the not-so-attractive cold, old and cracking tiles! I want my students to have a clean, inviting and comfortable space to learn, and a new rug will help provide this for them. We have tables and chairs in one section of the library, but there are several other open areas where students prefer to work, which usually means sitting on the tiled floor. A rug will help my students engage more in learning simply because they will be more comfortable.
