Clean and Clear Air for Learning

Help me give my students a well-ventilated classroom for our return to school in the fall with a fan and air purifiers.

My Students

My students are a tapestry of Brooklyn's finest and kindest. Our school aims to help its students discover their passions and develop their individual strengths. With our four-year homeroom advisory program called Crew, students grow to understand how important being part of a learning community is to academic success and personal development. And because of our small size, I get multiple chances to know nearly every student by name, and with time, by fashion choice, sound of their laughter, and more.

While our school has many amazing programs, a large majority of the students we serve still struggle to take full advantage of these opportunities because of financial burdens, unstable home conditions, and lengthy commute times to our building.

For these reasons, we try to ensure we can bring a multitude of fulfilling experiences to the building and reduce the costs of those outside ones where possible.

My Project

It's a little unbelievable that it has come to this, but this is our new reality. The current plan is to re-open schools in September and return to the building for as much in-person learning as possible. I m requesting two air purifiers, replacement filters and a pedestal fan.

My school building was built in the 1930s, so outdated is the kindest adjective to describe its conditions.

The classrooms I teach in are the largest on our school's floor - over 620 sq. feet each with very tall ceilings. We generally rely on opening the windows and a single, equally outdated, A/C unit for air circulation.

As a chronic allergy sufferer with sensitive airways, returning to school indoors gives me great anxiety. But, I also want my students to have the best educational experience possible given our current conditions and knowing that remote learning isn't it for many of them. Even with smaller class sizes, masking, distancing, hygiene, and sanitization, too much of the science points to indoor airborne transmission of the virus, and too little discussion is focused on this.

Therefore, I'm asking your help to make my classrooms just a little bit safer for my health and those of my students this coming school year by helping to purchase air purifiers, additional HEPA filters, and a room fan. With two 480 sq. ft air purifiers, this can help cleanse the air in the classroom for myself and my students. With the standing fan, we can keep the air moving around the classroom and moving from outdoors to indoors and vice versa when set up strategically by the windows. Every little bit of precaution helps to reduce risk when the time comes.
